Friday Find: Hotpads! /Pannenlappen!

According to the stories it is soooooo 70's to make hotpads, but I think they are one of the most used things in the kitchen! Better make them shine right and hook up some pretty ones!

Here are a few lovely examples:

How To: Picot stitch/Picootjes maken

A beautiful stitch for edging and adding a bit of playfulness! Lots of lace patterns use a picot-3 or picot-4 to cheer up the edges of a project. A picot stitch isn't hard to make! It's a little peak stitch that you make with a couple of chain stitches and you close the peak with a slip stitch. The number behind "picot" means how many chain stitches you are using in the tip of the picot stitch. A picot is alwaKeep this in mind! The closing of the stitch can be done in three ways. The first is the most used technique, the second is a technique I accidentally found and the third is a way I like to use in my patterns.

Here's how to do this lovely little stitch!

Let's say the pattern states: "single crochet once in next stitch, picot-3, single crochet once in next stitch"

Make your starting stitch, this is a stitch noted in the pattern. It could be a single crochet or a double crochet.

Next comes the picot part.

Chain the amount of stitches after the dash. In this case I had to make three chain stitches.

After this step are THREE different ways to close your picot!

Version 1:  Close picot with a slip stitch to the first chain stitch made. Done! Work along the row according to pattern.
Klaar! Werk verder volgens patroon

Version 2: Make the 3 chain stitches. Remove hook from loop. Insert hook into first chain of chain 3. Pull your last loop through the first chain and continue working along the row.

Version 3: Make your 3 chain stitches. Slip stitch in the side of the single crochet (actually in the middle of the single crochet stitch) below the chain stitches. Work along the row according to pattern.
Werk verder volgens patroon.

They are a bit different though in appearance though! In the picture above you can see the difference between all versions. From left to right: version 3, version 2 and version 1.

Enjoy this little stitch!
Veel plezier met deze steek!

Workshop "Evening Photography"

Last Friday I went to Scheveningen to attend a photography workshop with both my dad and my uncle. It was fun! The weather was splendid and it was a perfect opportunity getting to know my DSLR. It was my first ever photography workshop! I had a blast. Lots of pictures were a miss but with some helpful hints and filters I managed to make a few good shots. It is quite hard to adjust shutter speed and the available ligt and the possibilities of the camera to eachother in the evening!
I am very much tempted to look for a workshop on Blog photography.....

Happy Wednesday!

Fijne Woensdag!

Cradling New Life Part 3

They are starting to get big, sluggish and fat! My Nastartium is full of holes and caterpillar faeces.
I don't know how many are still out there.... Can't find them! I only found two big ones and two small ones. And another species (any idea? according to Google it could be a winter moth).

The Big Hairy Caterpillars are fun to watch!

On & Off the Hook 9/22

I managed to finish Kathelijnes girl bunting! I only need to find a good spot in her new room...
I never put a picture of my patches & pinwheels quilt over here after I finished it a few weeks ago. I love love love it. My goal was to finish two tops in 2014 so I'd better be starting on that second top!
More crochet goodies were put on Kathelijnes new room. My amigurumi mommy turtle and her hairtoy basket are now on her dresser cheering it up. They look awesome there. Just look at the colours!
I managed to find the pair of socks I was talking about last week. I had to delve into a few boxes, but here they are! One finished toe and one toe in the making. They can keep me company while commuting. The yarn is Drops Delight and I really like the slow colour change.
On Geerts room the boy bunting is now hanging proudly. Geert is very happy about it and loves that it's green. "It's my room colour!"

What's on your hook this week?

How To: Count Those Stitches

With distraction!

Seriously. Ever decided to count your stitches with a lovely husband who likes to make jokes? I think I am not the only one counting just a little bit louder through all the numbers my dear hubby likes to pour out whilst trying to decipher how many stiches I have!

Especially when you have started and really need it all to be in perfect order to start your pattern.

Here's how to count like a pro:

Met afleiding!

Echt.

Look at the top of your stitches and count the V's of your (chain) stitches. Every V (except the loop on your hook) is a stitch.

Or, look a the bottom! Count all the bumps to get your stitch count.

Do you have a long chain? Pick up some stitch markers and add one every 10 stitches or every pattern repeat.

Already in the middle of a pattern? How does it work with those starting chains? As a rule of thumb everyting below a starting chain of 3 chain stitches (for a double crochet) is not a stitch. Sometimes a chain2 for a half double crochet does count as a stitch but mostly not.

You do not count those starting chains if you are making half double crochet or single crochet. But really, do count them if you are making double crochet or larger stitches!

See you next time!
Tot de volgende tutorial!

Make your own Diary!

After years of finding the perfect solution for keeping track of my teaching/private life onto paper I almost gave in to the idea that there was no perfect solution. No perfect diary to have enough writing space the homework of my students, no nifty  and easy to find pages for to-do lists, and have a whole week on two pages.

After finding a pin on Pinterest about Teacher Books I let myself suck into the huge amount of information of building your Own Personal Teacher Book. I had never ever heard of it! And since I wanted to get organized this year......

Most of the formats I found were in a different layout than I use in my school. The main difference between High School in the US and the Netherlands is that I teach my classes for 50 minutes divided over 1 to 3 times a week. In the US it's more divided into mornings and afternoons. Another difference I found was that keeping track of grades was different. We do not have semesters or quarter years! But I managed to alter quite a bit of things to my own taste!

This is what I did during two days of browsing for ideas & trying things out in Word:
I made a week schedule which has big text boxes for working days, small ones for my days off and lots of space to jot down to-do lists and notes. In the header I kept month and week blanc. Then I added pages downloaded from different blogs and websites such as a calendar and colourful note pages.
I printed most of it at work, got all of my lists with my new classes on the first day, got on the bike with Kathelijne on my first day off and and got it binded at a copy shop with a metal ring binder. Done.

I love it!!!! I can write down anything I want and I open it up during class and have a complete week in a glance plus everything I need to do besides teaching! It is completely custom and I can test what I like and alter it myself. And I can doodle and colour away :) Absolute love!

I used the following links:

Colourful chevron front page
Personal information sheet (this was actually a school newsletter format)
Grades (can't seem to find it anymore here's an alternative)
Calendar (academic and year)
Meeting notes

Cradling new life Part 2: Caterpillars!

Big, bigger, biggest! They are growing really fast! They were about 3 cm a few days ago and right now are almost up to 5! Cute little hairy caterpillars. They are also dispersing themselves along the nastartium leaves so I really have to look for them. Sunday afternoon I turned over a leaf and saw another batch of Small White progeny!

Maybe next week there will be no Nastartium left and only huge fat green caterpillars? Who knows? See you next week for the update!

On & Off the Hook 9/15

It feels to me I have been piling up FOs. Yay! The past two weeks have been filled with weaving in ends, snipping off tidbits of yarn and dreaming about finished patterns. Lots of yarny goodiness... Ready to wear!

And the funny thing is, million of new ideas are popping up whilst weaving in those darn yarn ends. Millions of new ideas!

I try to stick close to a certain list of old ideas and hopefully my mind and my fingers can catch up with all the patterns needed to be written.

It feels so nice. I am finishing up abandoned WIPs. Poor things. They have been laying a year, a year and a half in my yarn closet. I really should be ashamed, don't I? I just lost interest somewhere down the road (I think you probably know what I mean!). I needed to kick my ass and get it done. One down. Three to go!
My to-do list for now:

One pair of crocheted socks (somewhere in a box)
One cotton shawl (somewhere in a bag)
One bunting ready to wear and one to assemble (boy and girl bunting free pattern !)
A big big blanket made of the yarn from the Dutch CAL blanket. Yes, you read it right. I frogged it.. I just wasn't into it anymore! (I know it's going to take a year to finish this one.... )

I give myself a deadline of a month to finish off the socks and the bunting. Go me!

What's on your hook?

The Big Shuffle Indoors!

The Big Shuffle of rooms has been done!!! We were working to this moment since May. Sheesh. It is done. The whole front and back have been renovated, adding a dormer, one room became two, putting in new floors, new wallpaper, new paint and the final thing which culminated towards the Big Move was installing the curtains. Hubby and me moved upstairs yesterday early afternoon, and just before dinner I moved Kathelijnes bed and toys to her now room!

I am really really pleased. Now we can see what we were working towards and oh my gosh it looks lovely. Just need to finish emptying the attic once our linen closet comes. All of our clothes are in bags and closets and boxes. And I need to prettify Kathelijnes room! They both shared happily a room from the beginning and now they are apart. Her room is a bit empty now but there are going to be some doll toys from downstairs and an IKEA toy storage unit. And for both rooms I am going to get some wall stickers.

It was a big thing and I am glad we are 95% done!

Happy Sunday!

Fijne zondag!
